Features of Velotric T1

Waterproof Design: Velotric T1 features an IPX6 rating, providing protection against water damage, even in heavy rain. However, some initial issues were encountered with electronics after exposure to rain, but a replacement unit performed well after being exposed to a day-long storm.

Sleek City Bike: The T1 boasts subtle electronics, internal cable routing, and a matte finish, enhancing its urban appeal. It comes equipped with mounting points for accessories like water bottle cages, rear racks, and gear on the forks. The thru-axle front wheel and non-quick-release seat post deter theft.

Functional Components: With an 8-speed drivetrain from the Shimano Altus line and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, the T1 offers reliable performance. However, the shifter placement may affect hand space on the right handlebar.

Riding Experience: The bike features thin 700x38c tires with adequate grip, suitable for city riding. The lightweight aluminum frame provides a medium-aggressive riding position, but lacks suspension, making it less comfortable over bumps and potholes.

Size Considerations: The T1 comes in two sizes, with the large model accommodating riders up to 6’3″. However, taller individuals may find the seatpost height insufficient, particularly those above 6’1″ with longer inseams.

Performance of  Velotric T1

Smooth Riding Experience: The Velotric T1 offers agile performance thanks to its motor and effective gearing. The motor engages smoothly with torque sensors, providing a gentle push when pedaling. It accelerates well, making it easier to maintain speed uphill or against strong winds.

Gear Management: Proper gear usage is important, especially when starting from a standstill. Shifting to a lower gear helps with initial acceleration, as the motor may struggle in high gears at low speeds. However, once in motion, it’s easy to adjust gears for optimal performance.

Speed and Handling: While not exceptionally fast, the T1 comfortably cruises up to 20mph, with the potential for higher speeds with additional effort. However, it may feel slightly less nimble due to resistance in the handlebars, impacting stability, particularly during turns.

Braking Power: The T1 excels in braking performance, with hydraulic brakes providing impressive stopping power, even at high speeds. However, the lack of brake sensors means the motor doesn’t automatically cut off when the brakes are applied.

Battery Efficiency: The T1 demonstrates excellent efficiency, offering a range of approximately 30.9 miles on a single charge, even surpassing the indicated battery level. This range may vary based on rider weight, terrain, and assist level.

How is the Assembly of the Velotric T1 eBike?

When you buy a Velotric bike, you’ll need to put it together yourself because it comes in a box. This involves simple tasks like attaching the pedals and putting in the seat post, as well as slightly trickier ones like fixing the handlebars and stem. It wasn’t too hard, and I got the bike set up in about half an hour. Charging the battery takes 5-6 hours with the charger provided, but you can’t take the battery out to charge it separately.

Setup Guide

Once you’ve assembled the Velotric T1, there are a few more steps to complete before it’s fully operational. Velotric provides an app that allows you to connect your bike to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Through the app, you can customize various settings, such as the power modes, including unlocking a top speed of 25mph. Additionally, you can set up the fingerprint scanner for added security, receive theft alerts if the bike is moved while “locked” in the app, and check the GPS coordinates of the bike.

However, some users may find that too many features rely solely on the app instead of being directly accessible on the bike itself. While this approach enhances the bike’s stealthiness, it can also make controlling it a bit clunkier. For example, essential information like speed, range, and odometer readings are only available through the app.

The Velotric T1 features a special handlebar stem with a Garmin Mount twist-lock attachment designed for mounting your phone. However, this means you’ll have to sacrifice using a phone case, as the twist-lock attachment sticks directly to the back of your phone. While this may not be a dealbreaker for some users, it’s a noteworthy aspect to consider, especially given recent concerns about similar functionality issues experienced by users of other e-bike brands like VanMoof.

Velotric T1 Design

Velotric T1 EBike Design

When it comes to design, the Velotric T1 is a real eye-catcher. It boasts a sleek and stealthy appearance, comparable to the Ride1Up Roadster V2, and offers similar riding capabilities. Powering the bike is a 350W rear hub motor, which can peak at 600W, along with a 352.8Ah battery that adds minimal bulk to the frame.

While some of the frame welding may not be as tidy as that of the Ride1Up Roadster V2, and the paint job is prone to blemishes, overall, the T1 remains an attractive bike. Despite weighing in at 37.6 pounds, which is 3 pounds heavier than the Roadster, the added weight is justified by the extras Velotric includes, such as the kickstand, lights, cassette, derailleur, and larger battery.

On the left handlebar, there’s a small control unit with three buttons that allow you to adjust the assist level and control the integrated headlight (although the included taillight is just a basic, non-integrated unit). Additionally, a fingerprint scanner is located on the top tube near the handlebars, serving as a means to turn on the bike.

The control unit also displays the power assist level using colorful LEDs and features battery indicator lights. However, the fingerprint scanner’s performance can be hit or miss, often failing to recognize registered fingerprints, which, combined with occasional Bluetooth reliability issues, may cause delays in getting the bike ready for a ride. While the scanner prevents unauthorized use of the motor power, it does not prevent theft of the bike itself.

Upgrades to consider include replacing the thin handlebar grips for improved comfort and swapping out the pedals, which may lack traction and width, especially for larger feet.

Conclusion

To sum up, the Velotric T1 is a really cool e-bike that feels smooth and quiet when you ride it, almost like a regular bike. It’s got great features, looks sleek, and works smartly. But, it relies a lot on a phone app, which could be a worry because of some problems other e-bike brands have had with apps. Still, it’s a fantastic choice if you want a fun and reliable ride.
